"This is a show to be cherished for its specifics. The details are just what a master poet would want to share and skilled musician interpreters like Amandes and Hills love to deliver."
Lawrence Bommer, Chicago Theater Blog
"If you find yourself missing home this holiday time, then LOCAL WONDERS should offer some balm. It is tremendously rewarding to spend some quality time with Kooser's writing, and it's clear that everyone here is deeply dedicated to the work of their subject... Amandes and Hills don't have a fake note in their bodies…"
Chris Jones, Chicago Tribune
"This ninety minute show is a wonderful warm and sweet journey that we are allowed to share through some wonderful folk music performed with heart and soul by Amandes and Hills. Hills, by the way is a wonderful musician with a great voice and a lot of acting ability. Amandes, brings a lot of charm to his Ted and together we see the chemistry that these characters shared. A heart-warming production that will have you leaving the theater with a small tear in your eye, but a great feeling in your heart."
Around the Town Chicago
“Seeing LOCAL WONDERS is like receiving a bundle of Christmas presents. The charm, honesty and humor of the Nebraska-based story wrap you in a big comfy sweater… The well-written play pulls you into the Koosers' journey… The journey is well paced and the change of presentation types keeps the telling of each memory fresh and fascinating, like opening a new Christmas present… Amandes and Hills are so engaging in their roles that, though I knew the play had a happy ending, I was fearful that it might not work out that way.”
Our Urban Times
“Playwrights Virginia Smith and Paul Amandes capture the essences of Kooser's awakening in LOCAL WONDERS. … Although Kooser lived it, when Amandes performs it, it feels personal! …The stories and songs Amandes shares with the audience seem conceived in the moment. The genuine connection to the material feels homespun and worn. …Anne Hills (Kathleen) is authentic as Kooser's wife, mother and other supporting roles. …Their chemistry is the charming variety of marital years in the making… The set designed by Holly Windingstad…transports the audience to look out from a kitchen table through a window to prairie brush in front of a big sky portrait. The scenic layers…perfectly accentuate the multiple stories...”
